Prince Harry has set out, in his own words, why he and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, moved back to Britain this year — and what he hopes happens next with his family. The interview, shared on 20 October 2026, was recorded in New York in September 2026, when Harry, 42, spoke to GQ host Zach Baron for the magazine’s “One More Question” podcast.
It was shared on the same day that King Charles III, Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed the Sultan of Oman at Windsor. Harry and Meghan stepped back as working royals in 2020 and spent six years in California before moving back to Britain in August 2026 with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.
Here are the six things that mattered most in what he said — and what he did not say.
1. He summed the move up in one word: “opportunities”
Asked why the family had moved, Harry gave a one-word answer, as reported by USA Today and InStyle: “Opportunities for the family.”
That is the reason on the record. A role in the television series The Gentlemen — a project Harry had been linked with — did not materialise. Meghan has been reading “a lot of scripts”, almost ten years after announcing a career break. The interview should not be merged into a claim that the move was for a specific job: no specific job was named as the reason for the move.
2. A British school for Archie and Lilibet mattered more than he expected
Schooling was the most personal part of the interview. Harry said, as reported by Page Six and Parade: “Being able to put the kids in a British school has meant a lot to me.”
He added: “I didn’t know how important it was to me… now they’ve been in school for two weeks. They’re loving it…”
He was careful to add, as reported by Page Six: “Don’t worry, I’m not criticizing American schools.” The comparison was not a rejection of American schooling. The name of the school was not given, and it should not be guessed.

3. Being closer to family, friends and “endless playdates”
Harry said he was glad “to be back closer to my family and to be back on UK soil for longer than a few days or a week here or there”. He added: “It’s been nice to be close to friends, family, friends and their children as well… endless playdates.”
After six years in Montecito, California, the move puts the children closer to grandparents, cousins and friends. The Sussexes were reported to have visited the King over the summer, and Harry and Charles were reported to have remained in communication.
4. The decision was “very short” — not planned for a long time
The move was not, on Harry’s account, planned for a long time. He described the decision as “very short”. As Parade reported, he said: “When certain stars align, and it’s clear that this should or probably will end up being the case, then we lean into that.”
Nothing in the interview suggested a return to working-royal status. Separately, Page Six reported a clarification from King Charles: the King sent a letter clarifying that Harry and Meghan are “private citizens” and no longer working royals. That clarification was not part of the GQ interview itself.
5. Reconciliation: “the most important thing” — and a line that needed clarifying
Asked whether he grieves the complicated relationships with his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William, Harry answered: “Yes, of course.” He described estrangement as a “massively relatable issue”.
He then said: “Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out. With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”
That line needed clarifying, and a spokesperson did so. A spokesperson told People that the “some people” comment “was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family” and that it was “made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way”. The clarification should be carried with the quotation.
Harry also said: “Scars stick around forever, but what your perception is and what your mindset is to those things that have happened — certainly letting go of the past, that is something that I’d encourage everybody to do.” He added: “There’s enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives to continue with issues with family.” And: “I am optimistic. I’m hopeful. I’m not naive.”
No direct contact has been reported between Harry and William since the return. Harry and Charles were reported to have remained in communication. William and Catherine have not publicly commented, according to Page Six.
6. Grief, Diana, and what the interview did not claim
Harry also spoke about grief. His biggest regret about the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997 was how he handled their final phone call, as reported by Page Six.
What the interview did not do matters as much as what it did. It did not announce a new role. It did not claim that reconciliation had been achieved. It did not criticise William or Charles by name. And it did not present the return as a return to royal duties. The interview was recorded before Harry’s first joint public engagements in Britain in October, including a visit to Nottingham.
What happens next
The test will be the months that follow. The reasons on the record are opportunities, a British school, closeness to family and friends, and a quick decision. On reconciliation, Harry’s position is that he wants it to work out, and that he is optimistic without being naive. Whether contact with William follows, and whether the family spends more time together, remains unconfirmed.
